Me & Mine - June

This month I thought I would take part in the Me & Mine family portrait linky as we actually managed to get a photo of us all together as a family which is something we don't manage to do that often.

This month has been a busy one for us and we've had lots of fun, we had a Father's Day Adventure at Sherwood Pines, I went to BritMums Live for the first time and laughed so much my face hurt and we celebrated my step daughter Natalie's 16th Birthday.

It's so hard to get a good photo when you have small children and these aren't perfect but they're about as good as it gets for us at the moment and it's lovely to have Natalie on them too.

The Ordinary Moments - Celebrating A Special Birthday

This week we've been celebrating my step daughter Natalie's 16th birthday which isn't really an ordinary moment at all but I thought it would be nice to share with you some photos from her little party at my in-laws house. Natalie had other celebrations on other nights but this was the obligatory family get together/buffet that everyone has when it's a family members birthday which is why I thought it would make a good ordinary moment.

Riley had fun playing with his cousin Alex and Summer took some of her first steps which we unfortunately didn't manage to get on camera. We had a lovely afternoon eating too much from the buffet, chatting and drinking lots of tea. Of course we ended the party by taking two tired and crying children home but not to worry because there's only a few more weeks until the next birthday which can only mean one thing, another party!

Common Complaints During Pregnancy And How To Ease Them

A few of my friends are currently pregnant and listening to them talk about some of the many complaints that go hand in hand with pregnancy got me thinking about my two pregnancies, so I thought it might be helpful to write a post about some of the most common complaints and how you can treat them or at least ease them slightly.

  • Heartburn during pregnancy is very common and is caused by a surge in the hormone progesterone which causes muscles to relax, this includes the muscle at the entrance of the stomach which when relaxed allows acid to travel back up the oesophagus causing a burning sensation. In the third trimester of pregnancy heartburn can also be caused by the baby putting pressure on the woman's digestive tract. Ways to ease heartburn are trying to eat a healthy diet, making sure you sit and sleep in a slightly more upright position and trying not to gain too much weight. You can also use heartburn treatments like Gaviscon which are safe to use during pregnancy but always speak to a health professional first.
  • Another uncomfortable aspect of pregnancy can be indigestion pain, this is generally caused by the baby pressing on the stomach and can feel like pain in the chest or top of the stomach or feeling very bloated and uncomfortably full after a meal. To help with indigestion try to eat smaller meals more often throughout the day instead of three big meals which should stop you feeling too full and bloated also there are some indigestion treatments that work really well at relieving it and are safe during pregnancy but again please consult a health professional before taking them.
  • Cramp is a common pregnancy complaint and mostly happens at night in your calf muscle, it can be very painful and take you by surprise and the best way to avoid it is to do a few simple exercises to increase circulation every day like circling your feet and pointing and flexing your foot several times. If cramp strikes then flex your foot and pull your toes back while you massage your calf muscle.
  • Lastly and probably the most commonly thought of pregnancy complaint is nausea and sickness, this can range anywhere from feeling sick at certain times of the day up until 12 weeks to being sick every day throughout your entire pregnancy. It's thought to be caused by hormones and it can make the first few months of pregnancy pretty miserable. Ways to ease nausea are making sure you get enough sleep as tiredness can make it worse, eat little and often because although you feel sick hunger can often make the feeling worse, drink plenty of water, try to distract yourself as the more you think about it the more sick you will feel and try to wear comfortable clothing, avoid tight waistbands. If you are one of the unlucky few who actually vomit frequently during your pregnancy then you must speak to your midwife or GP.

BritMums Live 2014

I can't believe BritMums Live 2014 is over, the build up seemed to go on forever and now the weekend has been and gone it doesn't seem real.

With it being my first year attending I wasn't sure what to expect and to be honest the first day left me feeling a little deflated, I found the Friday to be extremely busy, manic, stressful and a little awkward at times and I wasn't particularly excited about going back on the Saturday. However the Saturday was a completely different experience, it was much more relaxed, I was less nervous and I really, really enjoyed it.

It was great to get to talk to some brands face to face and my favourite brand by far there was Heinz Baby, they were so friendly, welcoming and generous especially Nicola who was absolutely hilarious and made us feel really comfortable.

I enjoyed the talks, especially the Instagram one where I learnt lots of really useful tips and I was really happy that two of my favourite bloggers Katie from MummyDaddyMe and Helen from Just A Normal Mummy won awards at the BIBs.

Of course I got my blog name on a Coke bottle (it just has to be done)

I met the lovely Katy Hill who was at the event hosting the BIBs.

But I think what I enjoyed the most were the evenings when I got to spend time with my blogging friends, I shared a hotel room with my blogging besties Hayley and Emily and on the Friday night we laughed so much we were actually crying "you want a FOURTH bed?!!" Don't ask lol.

On the Saturday evening I went out for dinner to Pizza Express with Hayley, JadeEmmaDebsAmyBexLaura and Sally. We had a lovely time chatting away and then we spent the rest of the night in Debs and Amy's hotel room witnessing the domestic from hell and laughing so much my face hurt until 3am followed by going back to our room and more chatting with Hayley until 5am! Needless to say I was extremely tired the next day but it was all worth it.

I met some absolutely lovely people over the weekend, far too many to mention them all but I just wanted to give some shout outs to a few people in particular.

Of course I have to mention again my amazing BritMums besties Hayley and Emily who made the whole weekend worthwhile, I loved every minute with you girls and can't wait to see you again.

I loved meeting Emma from Life At The Little Wood who was so gorgeous and incredibly friendly, Katrina from Cool Bananas who was lovely and such a sweetheart for bringing my drinks, Becca from Keeping Up With The Joneses who was a pleasure to talk to and Alex from Bump To Baby who was super sweet.

Thanks to Debs and Amy for being so easy to get on with and making me and Hayley laugh so much it hurt, you girls are awesome and I hope our friendship continues and I see you again soon.

Finally there were a few bloggers that I didn't get to speak to because I just didn't find the right time and they were Katie from MummyDaddyMe, Jenny from Let's Talk Mommy and Kerry from Oh So Amelia. Hopefully I'll get to talk to you next year.

I came away from BritMums Live 2014 a little bit wiser with regards to blogging and where I want to go with my blog and with a few more friends who are very special to me. All I have left to say is bring on BritMums 2015!

Bingo video proves you can never have too many shoes…

Family households are busy places. As well as the mountain of crockery likely to be found in the sink there are also sure to be mountains of shoes cluttering up hallways, living rooms and cupboards.
You might think (or be told) that you’ve got too many shoes but a new bingo video has proven this to be completely false. Just take a look:

This video has been created as part of an ongoing bingo campaign which has got bloggers and real life people like you and me to film short clips that help to visualise bingo calls. The above video for Number 24: Two Dozen simply wouldn’t have been possible without two dozen pairs of shoes (beautifully arranged to write the number 24).

A great family-friendly clip that epitomises how fun games like bingo are, we’re happy that someone finally found a way to prove that you can never have too many shoes.
Of course, this clip isn’t the only video in the collection and there will actually be a total of 90 videos published over the next five weeks to give a comprehensive overview of the famous bingo lingo.
Some of the videos, including our favourite for number 24, are already live and you’ll be able to view all 90 on YouTube by the end of the campaign.

For more information on the bingo calls videos, read this article.

This is a collaborative post.

Our Father's Day Adventure

When I asked my husband what he would like to do for Father's Day this year he suggested us all going to Sherwood Pines Forest Park for a long walk through the forest and a picnic, so on Sunday even though the weather looked a little dodgy we loaded up our picnic basket with tasty treats and off we went.

We'd arranged to meet Ian's family there so that we could all spend some time together and we had a really lovely day. There was a Gruffalo Trail which Riley loved and we spotted the animals from the Gruffalo stories as we wandered through the forest finding little play parks along the way.

In typical British fashion just as we set up our picnic it started to rain but we quickly moved over to some covered picnic benches and enjoyed a yummy lunch. The kids had so much fun and we really enjoyed our day there, also for when the kids are older there's Go Ape which looks amazing and some brilliant bike trails so it's definitely somewhere we'll visit again.

What did you get up to on Father's Day?

What I'm Wearing To BritMums Live 2014

I've seen a few of these post around lately and I love to have a look at what everyone is going to wear so I thought I'd join in and show you what I'm planning on wearing for BritMums Live.

My first outfit choice is some dark blue skinny jeans, a really pretty white sleeveless floral lace top with a statement necklace to add some colour and some tan coloured ballet flats. I want to look smart but also feel comfortable so I thought this outfit would be perfect.

My second outfit is some light wash skinny jeans, a cream camisole top with a cream and bright pink kimono and some nude, studded ballet flats. I love the bright pop of colour that the kimono adds to this outfit and it's super comfortable to wear too.

I think I'm going to bring a couple of dresses too for the Friday and Saturday evening but I haven't quite decided which ones yet.

Let me know what you think of my outfit choices and if you've done an outfit post leave me a comment with the link and I'll pop over and take a look.

Siblings - June

I haven't managed to take any photos of Riley and Summer together yet this month so I thought I'd use some that we'd taken on our holiday a couple of weeks ago. They had such a lovely time playing in the sand together and riding on the massive inflatable crocodile that Daddy bought for himself them, it makes me so happy to see them getting on so well.

I've been watching them together a lot this past few weeks and I'm starting to see how their relationship is going to go, at the moment it seems that Summer takes great pleasure in winding Riley up, she's always tapping him to get his attention when he's watching tv or trying to feed him his dinner, Summer finds this hilarious but Riley isn't always amused.

Summer always likes to be on the go and playing while Riley likes to chill out and watch tv sometimes and those are the times that she enjoys winding him up the most. He does get annoyed with her but as soon as he sees the giant, cheeky smile on Summer's face he can never stay mad at her and he knows that she only does it because she wants to play with him.

Their favourite game to play at the moment is chasing, they crawl round the living room chasing each other and laughing hysterically. There's nothing better for me than the sound of that laughter, it's the whole reason I wanted more than one child and I hope to hear it, even when they're adults as often as I can for the rest of my life.

The Ordinary Moments - Meal Times With Summer

This week I thought I'd join in with a link up by one of my favourite bloggers Katie from MummyDaddyMe called The Ordinary Moments.

My current favourite ordinary moment is mealtimes with Summer, it seems like such a simple thing and no big deal to most people but as the mother of an extremely fussy eater (my 3 year old Riley) mealtimes with him aren't always that much fun. Summer however is a joy to sit with at mealtimes, she pretty much eats anything I give her with a great big smile on her face and it makes me so happy to see her enjoying her food.

Summer loves fruit and vegetables and seeing her happily sitting there eating them makes me want to jump for joy as I've tried everything to get Riley to eat them all to no avail.

We were in desperate need of a food shop a few days ago and all I could find in the cupboards was crackers but Summer scoffed them down no problem with a great big smile, she's my little ray of sunshine.

I know Riley will grow out of his fussy eating one day and I'm also aware that Summer's amazing eating habits may not last forever but for now I'm enjoying every mealtime with her and savoring each ordinary moment while it lasts.

My Essential Holiday Items

We recently went away on holiday to Tunisia and there were some items that we took with us that I wouldn't have been without so I thought I'd share them with you in the hope that they're helpful for you if you're going on holiday soon.

We decided this time to take a small case as hand luggage as well as our large change bag because we wanted to make sure we had lots of things to keep the kids entertained on the 3 hour flight. This case is the perfect size for using as hand luggage and has wheels and an extending handle so it's easy to move around. I love the polka dot design and will probably be using this case when I go to BritMums Live in a few weeks. The case is part of Sainsburys Spring/Summer luggage collection.

We knew the kids would be spending a lot of time in the pool so for Summer the Huggies Little Swimmers swim pants were a must have, they work so well as a disposable nappy but they don't soak up loads of water when they're in the pool. For when the kids got out of the pool and were getting dry we used the Little Swimmers Hygiene Mat which gave the kids something dry and non-slip to sit or stand on while I got them dry and dressed, we used it loads on holiday and is also useful to take with you if you take your kids swimming. We also took lots of baby wipes with us and we're currently using and loving the Huggies Soft Skin wipes, they're nice and thick and very soft on Summer's skin.

My son Riley suffers a lot with his ears so I was a little worried that they would hurt him on the plane so these Earplanes earplugs were a great help, they come in different sizes depending on your age and they seemed to do the trick as he didn't complain of any pain in his ears at all.

Lastly we needed to make sure that Riley had something to keep him occupied for the plane as we were pretty sure that Summer would sleep so we got him this amazing Dinosaur sticker and activity book from The Works, if you aren't familiar with The Works they have a gigantic range of books for super low prices. Riley loves dinosaurs and he loves stickers so this was perfect and it kept him busy for pretty much the whole flight.

I hope this post has helped to give you some ideas if you're travelling with children, leave me a comment and let me know what your must have item when travelling with kids is.
