Family travelling essentials for winter day trips

Your family days out shouldn’t stop just because of a little rain or snow. In fact, my kids love this type of messy weather even more than summer, so our road trips and excursions are an absolute must during these winter months. However, because roads can be icier and there are generally more hazards around, there are a few travelling essentials you should always take with you. Whether it’s a full-on camping holiday, or just a day out to a national park, as long as you have these items in your car you should have every eventuality covered.

1.      Boots and extra footwear

I make sure that our family wear their best walking shoes whenever we go on an adventure, but this is even more important during winter. You need to make sure you have boots with a fixed outside structure to them to prevent the feet sliding around, and a good tread to cover different terrain in icy conditions. However, for when it’s wet and muddy, I always make sure I have a spare pair of wellington boots and long socks for each member of the family in the car.

2.      Raincoats and macs

Now that you have the best footwear, you’re also going to need some high-quality waterproof coats. Opt for the heavier, all-weather coats, as living in the UK, we deal with wet weather pretty much all year-round, so you’ll get a huge amount of use out of them. My top tip here though is to also take along a light-weight mac in the car; if you’re hot and bothered after all that walking, or the sun decides to shine, you’ve still catered for the whole family and they can easily be stored in the car.

3.      Your emergency kit

As you’ll be dealing with more adverse weather conditions, it’s more likely that one or more of your family could take a tumble in the snow or slip in the mud. Always keep a simple medical kit in the car, and take a few key items with you in a rucksack when you park up – just enough to help the situation until you can get back to a safe place, such as plasters, anti-bacterial wipes and bandages. You should also aim to keep a blanket, extra water and a torch in the boot of the car, in case of any breakdowns.

4.      Life-saving gadgets

Technology these days can get us out of some pretty sticky situations, and a lot of it is inexpensive as well as reassuring to keep with you. These products range from a USB port for the cigarette lighter in the car (in case you have a breakdown but run out of battery), to Smart padlocks so you don’t need to worry about losing your luggage key.
